Culture is bigger, stronger and faster than strategy Micro-blog series
Strategy is your roadmap.
You’ve heard that before, and a map is a good thing to have on a long journey. It’s unlikely you will get to your final destination without knowing where you are going. All well and good so far.
But your culture is how you and your team drive the car. Lead foot on the gas, or riding the clutch? 10 and 2, or steering with one forearm over the wheel? Windows down and open to the world, or windows tight with the A/C doing all the work while it sucks the life out of your mileage?
You don’t have a strategy for driving home from work, because you get there on automatic.
On an organizational level, that’s culture getting you where you are going...because that’s where you have always gone. Not only do you not need a map to get home, it would obviously get in the way of getting home safely and efficiently. Good luck with your new map, the one that leads off into the far reaches of unknown lands, when you’re culture has already started heading for the comforts of home.
Have you made sure you have the right culture in place, the right driver, before you head off on the journey?
